Isn't it strange you read a book and love the characters so you buy the next in the series wanting to know more about the people you have come to love but then for some reason the author alters them into something that you no longer recognise. I read Tall Dark and Lonely and loved it.So I bought this one,'Without Regret' I am not going into all the chapters that were just a re-hash of the previous book (boring... ) I am not going in to the awful grammar and the fact that the authors understanding of tenses is sadly lacking. Did this book get read by a proof reader at any stage?
No I'm not going to comment further on those things, let's get to the nitty gritty the whole reason we read romance novels. The Hero!
Our Hero! Chris who was really promising in the last book has in the last several years (between books) turned in a complete and utter..... Mmmm let say Ass as I'm sure amazon would not like me to use stronger terms. He (Chris) may have his reasons for becoming one of the most irritating and annoying heroes in the history of literature but I stopped caring, in fact I wanted any number of nasty things to happen to him. His girl.... Supposedly the other half of his soul was a bit wet but even she did not deserve such a .....let's go with Ass again! I finished the book but only because I wanted to know what the subsidiary characters were up to. I doubled checked the sex of the author I don't want to sound sexist but how could any woman write about a heroine that allows a man to have sex with her for three months without a kind word? Not one and the whole time trying to ship her off to what is effectively a prison and demanding she has an abortion! I don't care what kind of bond anyone shares no self-respecting woman would do that, so do we take it that the heroine has no self-respect? Well she is described in the book as as being feisty and a standalone girl she has coped from a young age on her own and has done okay so why would that kind of character take this kind of abuse the short answer is she wouldn't and no I don't care how good the sex is the author cannot have it both ways personalities have to be believable.
I like my hero's handsome, sexy with a bit of angst, maybe a dark side, even a little bit of an ass at times that's fine because love cuts through all that - Chis was just a jerk who I wanted to put in a sack and drop of the nearest cliff he did not elicit sympathy, empathy or lust.

Without Regret A Sentinel Novel RL Mathewson Books Reviews
Chris Williams basically raised himself, his mother was trash and he fought every day to survive. He never expected to be adopted at sixteen by a Pyte and his best friend Madison. He also never realized he was a Sentinel whose job it was to protect humans.
Every ten years 10 Sentinels are born, 5 male and 5 female, they are destined to be mates. After he is injured he thinks he is going to meet his mate soon, but she is nowhere to be found. Years later Isabella comes into his life, but she has no clue she is a Sentinel or what her duties entail.
Isabella think she has been kidnapped by a chocolate stealing cult. She is a geek through and through and this family that has kidnapped her keeps talking in circles while she is just thinking of a to escape. After she realizes that there are things that go bump in the night, that she does have a mate, and that he doesn't want her Isabella forms her own plan. She is not letting some overblown hot head send her off to an island without a fight.
I started off liking this one quite a but then Chris turned into such a jerk. He redeems himself at the end but he was so mean to Isabella, you know why but still it was almost cruel at times. Overall good series, introduced some new characters I am very curious about.
When I recently discovered this author, I did a marathon reading session of first the Bradford stories and then the Pyte/Sentinel. I was greatly disappointed on just how horrible (not poor, horrible!) the editing was for this story. Hopefully, the remainder of the series will return to the good editing of the prior series. I don't nit-pick spelling/grammar, but this was super bad - and lead me to believe only a spell check was run (conscious is not the same as conscience; vein is not same as vain, etc.). I even contemplated stopping but the plot was good and as always twists original - sometimes in unpleasant ways but always believable as written. The hero in this one takes some liking but I view his issues (e.g., shame at a weak mate) no different than I would view a heroine's - as long as by the end s/he has acknowledged issues and grown, I'm happy. Would I recommend it - yeah, but only for the story itself and the series. Kind of squint and may be the editing won't be so bad )
