Wonderful story for animal lovers, nature enthusiasts, and adventure seekers alike. Fun for adults and kids to read, and watching the movie after is a nice reward. I did prefer the book to the movie, but so fun to see it come to life! My kids thoroughly enjoyed me reading it to them. Such an exciting ending as well.Tags : Nim's Island [Wendy Orr, Kerry Millard] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. A girl. An iguana. An island. And e-mail. Nim Island Wendy Orr Kerry Millard 9780440418689 Books Reviews
Much better than the movie, but I suppose that usually goes without saying. (The movie wasn't bad, this was just much deeper and better.)
My nine year old granddaughter read this as soon as she received it, then read Nim at Sea. We also rented the DVD that was surprisingly well done.
This book arrived in good shape. According to the nine year old who read it This is a good book for a nine year old because it does not have long hard words, it is an interesting story, and the book isn’t too long. The illustrations are cartoons.
I purchased the library bound edition as a gift for $17, and what I received is a cheap paperback with a hard cover. This book is worth $5 at the most. Had I known, I would have purchased the paperback. Don't waste your money.
This is a great book for nine and ten year olds. I love everything about it EXCEPT THE COVER. It used to have a nice pencil drawing by Kerry Millard that matched the inside illustrations but has since been replaced by a scene from the (terrible) movie that it was turned into. When will publishers understand that most kids like to read and don't need a sensational cover to be interested in a book.
A fun girl's adventure, with a girl protagonist who can fend for herself in just about any situation -- picture My Side of the Mountain with a girl on an island.
Nim and her scientist father live happily on a tropical island. When her father leaves on one of his frequent scientific jaunts in his boat, Nim happily takes care of her home and pets -- until her father is delayed by mechanical problems and a storm. By email, Nim contacts an adventure writer named Alex, who flies (and boats) to Nim's island to help.
The movie that was made from this book is pretty true to the original plot, except for the character of Alex, who in the book was not nearly as fearful of going out in the world as she was portrayed in the movie. It was so overdone in the movie that you couldn't believe that she could actually overcome her fears and leave her home.
A fun adventure for girls 7-12. I can picture 5- and 6-year-old girls enjoying it too, if it were read to them.
For those who want to read other Wendy Orr books, see my review for Mokie and Bik, a hilarious book about twins who live on a houseboat, for children 4-8.
The book has a lot of things that the movie doesn’t have that surprised me the most. For example, Nim does the things that Jack does and Alex’s fear in the book is flying. She had the courage to leave her flat unlike the movie Alex. The illustrations sort of remind me of illustrations from Roald Dahl books. Great book. I highly recommend it.
Such an exciting ending as well.
