I read this book for a PhD course in Intercultural Education and found it helpful for any culture. It is written in the storytelling style of collectivist and/or oral cultures (not so Western/linear) but, still engaging and I found myself drawn into the story and looking for the subtle lessons - and how they might apply in my own teaching and cross-cultural situations. I would recommend it for any teacher.

I'm not much of a reader, especially when it comes to academic books. But "Rooftop Perspectives" is not your ordinary education book. Unlike other books on this topic, this is written as a narrative and has characters who are dynamic and real and very easy to connect with. This book immediately had me captivated by and relating to John's journey and hanging on the edge of my cafe seat with him as I "listened" to LiuPing's witty and humorous words of wisdom and story. The story within a story was a brilliant way to address those tough questions that we teachers often wrestle with. I think this is an excellent resource for any educator who is looking to get to the heart of teaching students and who needs direction in asking questions about and finding the value in what truly matters in education. A great read and a highly recommended book!

Reenders has been absolutely instrumental in helping me to embrace the emergence of a new educational paradigm, or potentially a reversion back to the ancient approach. This is a paradigm that is built upon the transference of wisdom as opposed to mere knowledge in the classroom. This conversation truly transcends the realm of Christian education and pours into all classrooms around the globe. Reenders masterfully weaves together a storyline embedded in China's ancient past. Whereas most books in the realm of educational paradigm can be challenging to complete, Rooftop Perspectives reads like a fascinating novel that you don't want to put down. I believe that Reenders work is imperative in a time when we have overwhelmingly embraced standardization in education. The drive to teach wisdom as opposed to knowledge is absolutely vital in ensuring a culture that fosters creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship. In the end, wisdom is freedom, and we should yearn with great sincerity to set our students free!
Rooftop Perspectives the story of a teachers journey within a journey. John travels to a foreign country to teach students only to find his ideas of teaching a Christian worldview to his students is challenged by the school he works at. While walking through town in sub-zero weather John happens upon Liu Ping a Chinese restaurant owner who invites him in out of the cold for tea, and as it turns out, much, much more. What follows is a series of visits to Lui Ping’s rooftop restaurant where John’s own thoughts of Christian education with a Christian worldview gain perspective and clarity.

Great book for all Christian teachers. The more teachers who read this, the better, because we all need to be more intentional about helping our students think Biblically. This book lays a great foundation for how to make this happen and starts a critical conversation.

Rooftop Perspectives starts with an intriguing narrative that will draw you in and make you wonder what's coming next. John, who teachers in China, is plagued by questions, doubts, and frustrations about his work and its purpose. But through his interactions with LiuPing and the intriguing tale that he tells, John starts to find some answers. Or more accurately, he starts to ask the right questions.

Towards the end of the book, the reader will experience an incredible shift from fiction to application as John experiences a string of exciting epiphanies.

And it wasn't just John who was excited. I found myself wanting to both slow down to digest these great thoughts and simultaneously read faster to find the next revelation.

Rooftop Perspectives lays the foundation for an incredible plan to reach students, whether you teach in a Christian, private, or public school. But it does something even more important - it prompts us all to discuss this important issue much more. There's nothing more important that discipling our students and helping them develop a strong faith for themselves. We can and must be more strategic and coordinated in our efforts, and I believe this incredible book is one of the first steps in the right direction.
